CSR & Sustainability
Environment
Our commitment to the environment and sustainability is evident in the products we create, the ways in which we create them and the methods we employ to handle them throughout their lifecycle.
Our commitment is also manifest in ongoing companywide efforts to minimize our own impact by improving energy efficiency, saving water, and reducing waste and greenhouse gas emissions. At our Pittsburgh headquarters, for example, we have reduced water and sewage usage over the past two years consistently by 1.5 million gallons.
These efforts have been widely documented since 1993 when Bayer became one of the first chemical companies to publish an environmental report. Soon after, we joined the industry’s Responsible Care initiative, became one of the 45 founding members of the United Nations' Global Compact and joined the Global Reporting Initiative.
These and other ongoing sustainability efforts have garnered Bayer numerous awards, including the “Low Carbon Leaders Award” at the 2005 Climate Summit in Montreal, the “Industrial Water Quality Achievement Award” from the Water Environmental Foundation in 2004, and three U.S. presidential awards, including most recently the “Ron Brown Award for Corporate Leadership” in 2006. Business Week magazine named Bayer one of “the top green companies of the decade.”
Outside reporting agencies confirm Bayer’s CSR record. Today, the company is represented in important relevant indices, such as the Climate Disclosure Leadership Index, the Dow Jones Sustainability Index World and its European counterpart, the Dow Jones Sustainability Index STOXX, and the FTSE4Good series.
